Koalas are one species, Phascolarctos cinereus. They vary across their range, but the common labels “Queensland koala,” “New South Wales koala” and “Victorian koala” should not be treated as three separate species. This distinction matters if you are choosing art or a model for someone who knows the animal well.
A north-to-south pattern
The New South Wales environment department describes a broad pattern: koalas tend to be smaller in the north and larger in the south. Southern animals often have longer, thicker, brown-grey fur, while northern animals tend to have shorter, silver-grey fur. The pattern is more useful than a rigid three-box classification; individuals can vary within a region.
A product called a “Victorian koala” may simply use a darker, fluffier illustration. If the recipient cares about accuracy, inspect the actual image rather than relying on the title.
A koala is a marsupial
The familiar nickname “koala bear” is misleading. Koalas are marsupials, and a joey develops in its mother's pouch. WWF-Australia's koala overview also explains their close dependence on eucalyptus forests for food and shelter. A book about koalas can make a more interesting present than a generic bear-shaped toy for a curious child or wildlife fan.
What to look for in a gift
For wall art, check whether the illustration shows a naturalistic koala and whether the setting resembles its eucalyptus habitat. For a figurine, compare the face, ears and coat color in the product photos. Artistic license is fine; the important thing is to match the recipient's taste for realism or cartoon style.

Conservation context
Status depends on jurisdiction. WWF-Australia reports koalas as Endangered in Queensland, New South Wales and the ACT; that does not mean every population has the same legal status.
